ActionAid tackles climate change in Cambodia with latest appeal
ActionAid’s ‘She Is The Answer’ appeal, which launched today, aims to put women front and centre of climate change adaptation in Cambodia.
Climate change in Cambodia is putting millions of lives and livelihoods in danger with flooding, storms and draughts causing depleting fish stocks and crop failures. Women are disproportionately impacted by these effects due to working in industries that are vulnerable to extreme weather.
With ActionAid’s support through the ‘She Is The Answer’ appeal, network of ‘Women Champions’ in Cambodia are speaking out and speaking up when vital decisions are being made, both at community and government level. Women Champions are helping villages and farms protect themselves by setting up early warning systems, building defences and planting protective mangrove barriers. They are also helping to create floating schools, spreading knowledge of sustainable farming practices and educating the next generation in new livelihoods that are less likely to be impacted by climate change.
Samphy Eng from ActionAid Cambodia says: “When disaster strikes, we know that women and girls are disproportionately impacted, yet they continue to be excluded when decisions are made.
“It is so important that we challenge traditional patriarchal structures – we must champion women leaders and make sure their voices are heard so that women and girls are no longer marginalised. Only then can communities truly thrive in our new world altered by climate change.”
As a UK Aid Match appeal, all donations from the UK public to ‘She Is The Answer’ will be doubled by the UK government between 5 March and 4 June.
